About the Speaker

Dr. Edmund Bertschinger studies black holes, large scale structure, galaxy formation, and other fundamental questions, while leading the MIT Physics Dept. He attended SSP in 1975 and returned four summers as a Teaching Assistant, 1979-'82.
About the Dinner Venue
Only 15 minutes from Caltech via the Foothill Freeway, with magnificent views in every direction, La Cañada Flintridge Country Club is one of the most complete, family-friendly private clubs in all of Southern California.
Tickets
Purchase tickets online as early as possible to help us plan the catering.
Tickets are $80 for adults, $55 for spouse or other adult guest accompanying an alum, and $25 for students (age 12 through grad school). Consider a $250 sponsorship, which includes two tickets and recognition in the program, to help subsidize younger alumni. Prices are higher after Sept. 15th.
If you prefer to pay by check or at the door, you still need to register online. When you get to the green "Order Now" button, look under the button for a link to "Show other Payment Options", then choose "Pay Offline".
Optional: Tour of Mount Wilson Observatory
For the past century, astronomers have used the incomparable facilities of Mount Wilson Observatory to forever alter humankind's view of our place in a vast and expanding Universe.
In the afternoon preceding the dinner, join SSPers for a private guided tour of the Observatory, including the observing floor of the historic 100-inch Telescope.
Purchase your $14 ticket online by Sept. 15th. Note: the tour requires walking and climbing stairs at high elevation, so it is unsuitable for children under 6, or individuals with respiratory or heart problems or limited mobility. The century-old facilities are not ADA-compliant.
Lodging
For those coming from out of town, we recommend the Glendale Hilton or the Marriott Courtyard Pasadena, each about 10 minutes away.
