Questions from Parents
Q. My daughter will have to fly to the program. How will she get to campus?
A. We will arrange transportation to and from the airport (either Los Angeles International or Albuquerque Sunport). Details will be provided with the admission documents.
Q. My son has never been away from home for this long before. How can I be sure he will be safe and properly supervised?
A. After 40+ years of operation, we understand the dynamics of teenage life in this setting. Safety and security are our primary concerns. The staff-to-student ratio is high, and the teaching assistants and administrative associate live in the dorm with the participants. Physical safety, social relations, and other behavior are governed by explicit Codes of Honor and Conduct. Both campuses are located in small towns, far from city distractions. Participants may not drive, or have their cars on campus.
The Program does not provide health insurance to its participants. We do provide, at no cost, first aid for minor injuries, services of a registered nurse, and if needed, transportation to a local doctor, dentist, or hospital.
Q. SSP's Program fee is more than that at some other summer programs. Is it worth it?
A. We believe that SSP is an outstanding value. Every participant receives, in effect, financial aid of 50%, since our budgeted cost to hold the program, per participant, is about double the Program fee. (Alumni and other donors to this nonprofit corporation make up the difference.) Additional financial aid, up to 100%, plus travel grants, are given to participants demonstrating financial need. There is no better educational value anywhere, as evidenced by the comments of alumni (and their parents too).
Q. Are there other costs, such as an application fee, lab fees, or required supplies?
A. No. Each participant should arrive with some cash (we recommend $100-$200) for incidentals like snacks, laundry, and a new T-shirt or two.
